Hammam Izzuddin, Jakarta – House Speaker Puan Maharani urges those who are protesting and rejecting the enactment of the revised Indonesian Armed Forces Law (TNI Law) to "restrain" themselves.
"Please, let's all restrain ourselves. Please read the draft bill on DPR's website since it's readily available for the public," said Puan when met at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
The draft bill has just been completed with numbering and uploaded to the House of Representatives' website.
The speaker says people are welcome to protest the bill if they disagree with the revision upon reading the draft bill. "But if you have yet to read it, do that first (before protesting)," she said.
Based on Tempo's search on the official DPR website, the document is available in the national legislative program priority menu. The description states that the draft law regarding Amendment to Law Number 34 of 2004 concerning the Indonesian Armed Forces has been "completed." Below it, the TNI Law draft bill is available.
The military bill was passed unanimously by lawmakers in plenary session on Thursday, March 20.
Previously, the Civil Society Coalition for the Reform of the Security Sector rejected the proposed amendment, calling for the halting of the TNI Law discussion. "The TNI Law contains problematic articles that threaten democracy and human rights enforcement in Indonesia," said KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya on Saturday, March 15.
The coalition also feared that the revision of the TNI Law would weaken military professionalism, raising concerns about the revival of military dual function through the expansion of military roles in the government and civilian posts.
Protests against the TNI Law have also taken place in various locations across the country, including at the parliamentary complex during the aforementioned plenary session. People continue taking the streets for days afterwards, with the latest being in Surabaya on Monday, March 24. Clashes occurred between protesters and security forces at the Grahadi Building.
