Jakarta – The Muslim-based United Development Party (PPP) failed to meet the parliamentary threshold of 4 percent, according to the national vote count on Wednesday, meaning that it won't make it to the House of Representatives for the first time in history.

The PPP accumulated 5.88 million votes across all 38 provinces from the February 14 general elections, representing 3.87 percent of 151.8 million popular votes overall.

According to the 2017 general election law, a party that fails to get a minimum of 4 percent of popular votes won't be granted a House seat.

However, the PPP may dispute the results with the Constitutional Court if it has evidence of election fraud that affected its performance.

The gloomy news came despite the party welcoming prominent politician Sandiaga Uno as a new executive ahead of the election.

The PPP is an incumbent party that has had representatives in the lower chamber of the parliament since its establishment in 1973.

The party was a merger of four Muslim-based parties including the Nahdlatul Ulama Party, the United Tarbiyah Islamiyah Party, the Indonesian Islamic Brotherhood Party (PSII), and the Indonesian Muslim Party (Parmusi).

It emphasizes Islamic values as the party's line and carries the Kaaba as the party symbol.
