Jakarta – Ports across Java and Sumatra have been bustling with activity as cargo ships arrive carrying bags of milled rice from neighboring countries since the beginning of this month.

In the past week alone, two vessels from Thailand and Myanmar docked at Probolinggo Port in East Java, bringing a combined total of 8,200 tons of rice.

Workers are in the process of unloading 3,200 tons of Thai rice that arrived last week, while another vessel carrying 5,000 tons of rice from Myanmar arrived on Saturday morning, according to Yoga Prastiyadi, an official with the state logistics agency (Bulog) in Probolinggo.

The rice deliveries will be temporarily stored at Bulog warehouses in Probolinggo regency.

"However, if the government instructs distribution, we are prepared to send them to other warehouses across Java or outside the island," Yoga said.

On March 1, Malahayati Port in Aceh welcomed a ship carrying 6,700 tons of Thai rice while awaiting another delivery of 6,000 tons from Vietnam.

On the same day, workers began unloading imported rice at Boom Baru Port in Palembang, South Sumatra, where a total of 42,000 tons of rice are expected to arrive from Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar.
