Sultan Abdurrahman, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia has the potential to achieve self-sufficiency in meat production within the next four to five years, as the government steps up efforts to strengthen national food security.

He said the target could be reached within that timeframe if current programs continue to progress as planned.

"This is what we are working on, perhaps in four or five years, we can achieve self-sufficiency in meat," Prabowo said in Kebumen, Central Java, on Saturday, May 23, 2026, as quoted by the Presidential Secretariat.

He assessed that Indonesia's overall food security remains relatively stable, noting that the country has already achieved self-sufficiency in key staples such as rice and corn.

However, he acknowledged that several protein sources still rely on imports. "Our protein, eggs, chicken, and meat, are still not self-sufficient," he said.

Despite this, Prabowo expressed confidence that Indonesia can reduce import dependence and strengthen domestic food production in the coming years.

The push for meat self-sufficiency is not new. Previous administrations had also set a target of achieving beef self-sufficiency by 2026.

In 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture said cattle and buffalo populations were expected to continue increasing, expressing optimism that the 2026 target could be achieved.

To support this goal, the government has implemented various programs, including efforts to boost cattle and buffalo populations through the Special Effort to Accelerate Pregnant Cattle and Buffalo Population initiative, alongside broader livestock development and rural production support programs nationwide.
