Calvin Moniaga Sipahutar, Jakarta – Around 1.2 million vehicles have departed Jakarta ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, according to toll road operator Jasa Marga.

The figure represents about 34% of the estimated 3.5 million vehicles expected to leave the Greater Jakarta area during the week before and after the holiday, Jasa Marga President Director Rivan Achmad Purwantono said on Wednesday.

Traffic monitoring was conducted at four major toll gates – Cikampek Toll Gate, Kalihurip Toll Gate, Ciawi Toll Gate, and Cikupa Toll Gate – which serve as key exit points toward Central Java, West Java, Banten, and Sumatra.

"With the Intelligent Traffic Analysis platform, cameras and radar systems not only count outgoing vehicles but also predict traffic trends over time," Rivan said.

He noted that outbound traffic surged on March 14 and March 18.

At peak levels, about 256,000 vehicles exited Jakarta in a single day, prompting Jasa Marga to implement traffic management measures. All toll lanes were temporarily dedicated to outbound traffic toward Central and West Java, while vehicles heading into Jakarta were diverted to non-toll routes.

The measures were aimed at easing congestion as millions of Indonesians travel to their hometowns in the annual Eid homecoming exodus.
