Ichsan Ali, Jakarta – The government said Tuesday that it would provide travel discounts for the upcoming Eid holiday season as the archipelagic country readied a multimillion-dollar stimulus package to cut ticket prices.
Eid is synonymous with mass exodus. Many Indonesians across the archipelago will travel to their hometowns to celebrate the holiday with their family members. According to senior minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, the government's preparations for the homecoming season are not limited to infrastructure but also focus on ensuring that travel is affordable for everyone.
"There are discounts for toll road fares and train tickets. The same goes for ships. We are providing discounts of up to 17% on airfares," Agus said, when sending off B-Universe's homecoming team in PIK 2.
The Transportation Ministry estimated that this year's Eid homecoming would see 143.9 million travelers. The government also intends to allow civil servants to work in more flexible arrangements to ease the holiday traffic.
Chief Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto recently told reporters that Indonesia had allocated Rp 911.16 billion (around $54 million) for the Eid travel discounts. The money will come from state funds and other sources.
Indonesia has always been banking on Eid travel to boost its economic growth. The country aims to expand between 5.5 and 5.6% in the first quarter of 2026.
