Erfan Maruf, Jakarta – Indonesia will roll out a Rp 911.16 billion ($54.26 million) transport discount program during the Ramadan – Eid al-Fitr holiday period this year as part of an economic stimulus to manage peak travel demand and support domestic consumption, Chief Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto said on Tuesday.

"Ahead of the national religious holiday, the government is providing economic stimulus in the form of transportation discounts. The total budget amounts to Rp 911.16 billion, sourced from both the state budget and non-state funds," Airlangga said at Gambir Station in central Jakarta on Tuesday.

The discounts will apply across multiple modes of transport, with specific travel periods and passenger targets already set, he said.

Ramadan is set to begin on the evening of Feb. 18, while Eid is expected to fall on March 19.

State railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will offer a 30% fare discount for train journeys between March 14 and March 29, targeting up to 1.2 million passengers. The measure is expected to ease pressure on roads while encouraging early travel during the annual Eid homecoming rush.

For sea transportation, state-owned shipping company Pelni will provide a 30% discount off base fares from March 11 to April 5, with an estimated 445,000 passengers expected to benefit.

The government is also offering incentives for ferry travel. ASDP Indonesia Ferry will apply a 100% discount on port service fees between March 12 and March 31. The program is projected to serve around 945,000 vehicles and 2.4 million passengers, a critical move to reduce congestion at major ferry crossings during the peak holiday period.

Air travel will also be included in the stimulus package. Domestic economy-class airline tickets will receive discounts of between 17 and 18% for travel from March 14 to March 29, targeting about 3.3 million passengers.

The transport discounts are part of a wider Ramadan-Eid policy package that also includes a temporary work-from-anywhere (WFA) scheme on selected days before and after Eid al-Fitr, aimed at spreading travel demand more evenly. The flexible work arrangement will apply to civil servants and is encouraged for private-sector workers.

Indonesia's annual Eid exodus, known as mudik, is one of the world's largest seasonal migrations. Government data show that 154.62 million people traveled during the 2025 Eid period, compared with 110.43 million during the year-end holiday season, while overall mobility in 2025 increased by 5.11 percent year-on-year.
