Novali Panji Nugroho, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto spoke on the state of Indonesian democracy during his address at the Indonesia Economy Outlook 2026. According to him, the nation he leads remains committed to democratic principles.
He initially discussed the concept of the New Indonesia, stating that the vision prohibits any form of corruption within the country. "We must eradicate corruption from the land of Indonesia," he declared on Friday, February 13, 2026.
He assessed that the concept, which aims to combat systemic graft, is achievable. He further asserted that Indonesia remains a functional democracy.
"If there is no democracy, I wouldn't be the president. Isn't that right?" stated the chief patron of the Gerindra Party.
Prabowo was declared the president-elect alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka following the 2024 presidential election. The coalition pair garnered more votes than their two competitors, Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud Md.
The outcome of the 2024 presidential election, which resulted in the Prabowo-Gibran victory, was subsequently challenged in the Constitutional Court. One of the primary challengers was the Anies-Muhaimin pair.
This legal move was described as an effort to advocate for Anies-Muhaimin's voters after the General Election Commission (KPU) announced the official national vote count results.
Former vice presidential candidate Muhaimin Iskandar stated at the time that there had been numerous irregularities and abnormalities throughout the 2024 election process. Muhaimin currently serves as a minister in the Prabowo-Gibran cabinet.
He mentioned that these situations occurred long before the voting took place, citing examples such as regulatory engineering and state intervention that had been documented by the mass media and the public.
"There are many election findings that lack integrity. Amin's (Anies-Muhaimin) legal team will present all of this to the Constitutional Court," said Muhaimin, as seen on Anies Baswedan's YouTube channel on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
