Dani Aswara, Jakarta – Lieutenant General Deddy Suryadi, Commander of the Jakarta Military Regional Command (Pangdam Jaya), stated that the security situation in the capital is stable following a series of recent demonstrations.
"The situation is safe, smooth, and conducive. This is what we hope for, so that the economy can run smoothly and people can carry out their activities normally," Deddy said on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
He emphasized that these conditions must be maintained and not disrupted by irresponsible parties. To help ensure stability, joint patrols between the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police are ongoing at various locations. However, he stopped short of specifying how long they would continue.
"Our patrols back up the police. So, when the police are short on personnel, we help to secure the Jakarta area," he explained.
Deputy Chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Imam Sugianto, echoed this sentiment. After a working meeting with the House of Representatives Commission I on Thursday, September 4, 2025, he said, "God willing, it is already conducive, under the supervision of the TNI-Polri."
Recent protests and escalation
The statements from these officials come after a wave of widespread protests that began at the end of August 2025. An initial protest on August 25 in Senayan, Jakarta, which called for the dissolution of the House of Representatives, ended in clashes and arrests.
The protests continued on August 28, with workers presenting six demands, while students and school students again called for the dissolution of the House. Riots broke out after police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds.
The situation became more volatile when a Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle killed Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old online ride-hailing driver, in Bendungan Hilir. The incident sparked public outrage and protests by online motorcycle taxi drivers in several cities.
The homes of some legislators, including Ahmad Sahroni and Eko Patrio, were also ransacked by the crowds. In response, President Prabowo Subianto ordered the National Police Chief to take firm action against "anarchist acts."
Ultimately, a list of "17+8 people's demands" for the president, the House of Representatives, the National Police, and the TNI began circulating on social media.
