Novali Panji Nugroho, Jakarta - Indonesia's Human Rights Minister, Natalius Pigai, said his ministry will provide compensation, rehabilitation, and restitution for victims of past gross human rights violations.
The government, he said, is ready to offer social assistance to the victims. Working alongside the Ministry of Social Affairs, Pigai's ministry will provide compensation and restore the status of victims of human rights violations.
"We will attend to them, and we are ready to provide rehabilitation and restitution to the victims," he said when met at the Ministry of Social Affairs office in Jakarta on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
Indonesia has, to date, recognized 12 cases of gross human rights violations within the country, as confirmed by the then president, Joko Widodo, in January 2023.
The recognition came after President Jokowi received the reports and recommendations from the PPHAM Team (Non-Judicial Resolution of Past Gross Human Rights Violations).
"I have carefully read the report of the PPHAM Team on gross human rights violations established under Presidential Decree Number 17 of 2022," President Jokowi said at the time.
The human rights cases include the mass killings of 1965-1966, the Petrus killings of 1982-1985, the Talangsari Incident in Lampung in 1989, the Rumoh Geudong and Pos Sattis Incidents in Aceh in 1989, and the enforced disappearances in 1997-1998.
Additionally, Jokowi also recognized several other cases as gross human rights violations, including: the May 1998 riots, the Trisakti and Semanggi I and II tragedies in 1998-1999, the Banyuwangi witch-hunt case of 1998-1999, the Simpang KKA incident in Aceh in 1999, the Wasior incident in Papua in 2001-2002, the Wamena incident in Papua in 2003 and the Jambo Keupok incident in Aceh in 2003.
