Agnes Valentina Christa, Jakarta – Kaesang Pangarep, the youngest son of President Joko Widodo, has requested a criminal record check as part of the administrative requirements for the upcoming Central Java gubernatorial election, the South Jakarta District Court disclosed on Friday.
However, Kaesang's candidacy has been made unlikely by the minimum age requirement of 30 as stipulated in the local election law. By the time the General Election Commission announces the eligible candidates on September 22, Kaesang will still be 29.
Following massive student protests on Thursday, both the House of Representatives and the government have confirmed they will not amend the minimum age requirement.
Two days prior, the court issued a criminal record check confirming that Kaesang has never been indicted or convicted of a crime, according to court spokesman Djuyamto. The document also notes that Kaesang has no outstanding financial liabilities to the state.
Djuyamto further clarified that the criminal record check was requested to fulfill the administrative requirement for Kaesang's candidacy as vice-governor of Central Java.
