Hendro Situmorang, Jakarta – Golkar Party Chairman Airlangga Hartarto received explicit support for reelection from the party's youth wing AMPI on Tuesday, following remarkable results from the Feb. 14 elections.
Under his leadership, Golkar rose to the second position in the legislative election and successfully made Gibran Rakabuming Raka the elected vice president alongside President-elect Prabowo Subianto.
Moreover, Airlangga's Golkar "won 61.11 percent of local elections in 2019 and increased the vote tally in the 2024 legislative election to 15.28 percent, equivalent to 102 seats or more in the House of Representatives," said AMPI Secretary-General Ahmad Andi Bahri during the declaration of support in Jakarta.
Golkar needs Airlangga's leadership for the next five years to work side-by-side with the future government under Prabowo, whom Golkar helped win the presidency, Ahmad added.
Gibran, the eldest son of President Joko Widodo, was previously affiliated with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) until Golkar nominated him as Prabowo's running mate to compete against PDI-P presidential nominee Ganjar Pranowo and ticket mate Mohammad Mahfud.
Prabowo's popularity has soared since Gibran was confirmed as his veep candidate in October and the pair ultimately won the election with 58 percent of the vote.
"Praise be to God that Brother Gibran is elected vice president alongside Mr. Prabowo," Airlangga said during the gathering with the party's youth affiliation.
In addition to AMPI, six more of Golkar's affiliations have previously expressed support to get Airlangga's tenure extended by acclamation.
