Sella Rizky, Jakarta – The General Election Commission (KPU) will organize a redo election at 686 polling stations across the country on Saturday – the deadline for voters to cast their ballots.

Results from the Feb. 14 election at those polling stations were declared void for violations of the general election law, prompting the KPU to call a revote, KPU Commissioner Idham Kholik said on Friday.

The KPU can call a redo election if it finds evidence of improper opening of ballot boxes, erroneous vote counting, acts of tampering with ballot papers, and involvement of ineligible voters.

If voters write down their names or put certain marks for personal identification on the ballot papers, that will also lead to a redo election.

In addition, around 220 polling stations will hold rescheduled elections after a delay due to force majeure conditions.

In some areas in Demak regency, Central Java, the election was delayed due to flooding that followed torrential rains on Feb. 14. Voting postponement also occurred in Paniai, Papua, after perpetrators destroyed ballot papers and boxes on the election eve.

Overall, the presidential and legislative elections were held in more than 820,000 polling stations with more than 204 million registered voters. The participation level has yet to be announced pending the conclusion of the vote tally.
