Jakarta – Some of the fresh graduates entering the civil service in 2024 recruitment could begin their jobs immediately in Nusantara Capital City (IKN), Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Abdullah Azwar Anas said on Monday.

The minister added that digital talents newly recruited to the civil service would be sent directly to work in the nation's new capital, though he was unable to release any figures pending a proposal on the administrative workforce from the IKN Authority.

"We are still waiting [for the proposal]. We can announce how many while [other institutions] propose," Azwar said, as quoted by Tempo.co.

"How many the IKN, local administrations and ministries propose [they need]. We cannot just send them" to the new capital, he said.

Azwar said the final figure would be based on the exact number of civil servants the regional administration, ministries and other institutions needed.

"Who knows, we could prepare for 690,000 positions but only 400,000 is necessary," he said, adding that there would be tests and other requirements.

Earlier on Friday, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said the government planned to recruit 2.3 million civil servants this year, and that they would be prepared to face increasing technological disruptions.

"The government needs skilled young learners from all fields of study," he said, as quoted by Tempo.co.

According to the IKN Law, the relocation of the nation's new capital to Nusantara, which is currently under development in East Kalimantan, is to occur in five stages.

The process begins with the development of a core area of administrative offices in 2020-2024, followed by the development of shared office facilities in 2025-2029, an agile government in 2030-2039, an Industry 4.0 smart city in 2035-2039 and a smart city using artificial intelligence in 2040-2045.

"The current focus of the IKN relocation policy is in the first phase in 2020-2024, which focuses on the relocation of institutions and civil servants and effective government [management] in IKN via digital work patterns," Azwar said on Dec. 16 in a statment on the ministry's website.
