2019 general election disputes drop compared to 2 prior elections

Fikri Arigi, Jakarta – Ever since the Constitutional Court (MK) opened registration for applicants to file 2019 election disputes, judiciary watchdog KoDe Inisiatif recorded 469 applications have been sent to the MK, excluding presidential election disputes.

"There is a drop in applications at the Constitutional Court compared to previous general elections," says the KoDe Inisiatif report today.

In comparison to this year's 469 election dispute application, the 2014 general election produced 722 election dispute applications while the 2009 general elections saw 901 applications.

Moreover, the 2019 election disputes are dominated by those applied by the regional legislative council (DPRD) candidates with 215 applications, provincial DPRD levels sees 110 applications, House of Representatives (DPR RI) with 71 applicants, Regional Representatives Council (DPD) with 11 applicants, and 62 applications that did not specifically state its origins.

The regions with the most election dispute applications based on province come from Papua (71), West Java (34), South Sumatra (24), and North Sumatra (24).

KoDe Inisiatif sorts its election disputes based on 141 disputes on political party external conflict and 65 internal conflict disputes. Golkar Party is the political party with the most internal dispute application with 19 applications, while external disputes mostly come from the National Mandate Party (PAN) with 22 applications.
