Sultan Abdurrahman, Jakarta – The Commission for the Acceleration of Police Reform proposed the limitation of positions for police officers outside the structure of the Indonesian National Police. The Chairperson of the Police Reform Commission, Jimly Asshiddiqie, stated that President Prabowo has approved the proposal.

The Police Reform Commission conveyed the proposal to Prabowo during a discussion at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. "It was decided by the President that the positions which can be held by police officers must be determined limitatively. So, not like now, there are no restrictions," Jimly said after the meeting.

According to Jimly, police positions will be limited, similar to military positions regulated by the Indonesian National Armed Forces Law. The limitation of police positions, he said, will be stipulated in government regulations or laws.

Jimly stated that Law Number 2 of 2002, which concerns the Indonesian National Police, may be revised to align with recommendations from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission.

"It has been decided that in the law, it will be left to the preparation process, and there is even a draft law ready to be discussed in the DPR (House of Representatives), where the new points from this Reform Commission's result will be included," he said.

The Police Reform and Acceleration Commission was formed in response to demands to improve the police institution that surfaced following mass protests at the end of August 2025. Various parties believe that the police have abused their authority in handling the protests.

The Police Reform Commission has been making recommendations since February 2026. However, the commission only met with Prabowo in early May. The recommendations for improving the police institution are the result of the Commission's study for about three months.

The protests resulted in the deaths of ten people, including an online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, who was run over by a Mobile Brigade Police tactical vehicle on Jalan Pejompongan, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

When meeting with a number of civilian community leaders from the National Conscience Movement in September 2025, Prabowo expressed his willingness to reform the police. Prabowo then formed a police reform commission a month later.
