Annisa Febiola, Jakarta – Amnesty International Indonesia stated that at least 295 human rights defenders (HRD) were attacked throughout 2025. Amnesty even referred to 2025 as the year of living dangerously for everyone who thinks critically.
During the first half of 2025, Amnesty recorded 104 HRDs were attacked from January to June. Although the organization has released its findings, the government has ignored them. As a result, the number of attacks sharply increased to reach 295 cases by the end of 2025.
The Executive Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, stated that the fact that almost 300 HRDs were attacked throughout 2025 has not been able to move the government to provide protection.
According to Usman, the HRDs have reported a series of terror they have experienced since early 2025. The name of the activist from the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), Andrie Yunus, is also included in the list of 295 HRDs.
In March 2026, someone attacked Andrie with acid. Later, the investigation revealed the involvement of TNI members in the attack. Throughout January to March 2026, Amnesty also noted that at least 29 HRDs were attacked.
Usman assesses that Indonesia seems to be at a blindspot for HRDs. He added that state authorities are often involved in the attacks on HRDs, as in the case of Andrie Yunus. "Unfortunately, the state has ignored demands for the formation of a Joint Fact-Finding Team (TGPF) to uncover the key actors behind the attacks," said Usman.
