Antara, Jakarta – Authorities in Indonesia's capital will require nightclubs, discotheques, bars, and several other adult entertainment venues to close during much of the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan, officials said on Tuesday.
Under a new regulation issued by the Jakarta provincial government, businesses including nightclubs, steam baths, massage parlors, and adult-only gaming arcades – both manual and electronic – must shut down starting one day before Ramadan begins until one day after the second day of Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the fasting month.
However, exemptions apply to venues located within four- and five-star hotels and certain designated commercial zones, provided they are not situated near residential neighborhoods, houses of worship, schools or hospitals.
Andhika Permata, head of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, said that businesses allowed to operate during Ramadan will face restricted hours, from 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. local time. Operators must also complete their billing process, known as a "closed bill," at least one hour before closing time.
Additional closures will be enforced on specific religious dates, including the first day of Ramadan, the night commemorating Nuzulul Quran – which marks the revelation of the Quran – the eve of Eid prayers and the first and second days of Eid al-Fitr.
The regulation aims to maintain public order and a conducive atmosphere in the capital during the holy month.
The provincial government has also prohibited businesses from displaying pornographic or erotic content, facilitating gambling or narcotics, or creating public disturbances.
"This arrangement is not merely a restriction, but a proportional adjustment so that business activities can continue while respecting the religious values of the community," Andhika said.
Jakarta observes annual operating adjustments during Ramadan, when Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset.
According to the Religious Affairs Ministry's 2026 Islamic calendar, Ramadan is projected to begin on Thursday, Feb. 19. The official start date, however, will depend on the outcome of a meeting at the ministry on Tuesday. Eid is expected to fall on March 20 or 21.
