Dani Aswara, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has barred mass organizations, locally known as ormas, and any other groups from carrying out sweeps or raids on restaurants that continue operating during the Ramadan fasting month.
The policy, officials said, is intended to preserve a peaceful and orderly atmosphere in the capital during the fasting month.
"Governor Pramono Anung does not allow social organizations or any party to carry out sweeping or raids on restaurants that stay open during Ramadan," said Cyril Raoul Hakim, also known as Chico Hakim, Special Staff for Public Communications to the Governor, when contacted on Monday, February 16, 2026.
Chico said the main consideration behind the prohibition is to safeguard Ramadan as a period marked by peace, tolerance, and harmony among followers of different religions.
Although Jakarta has a Muslim-majority population, it is also one of Indonesia's most diverse cities, and the governor bears responsibility for maintaining public order and social cohesion.
"The directive focuses on strengthening tolerance, mutual respect, and maintaining public order so that the fasting month can proceed smoothly for all residents," Chico said.
He added that the Jakarta Provincial Government is prioritizing constructive measures during Ramadan, including securing food supplies, stabilizing prices, supporting religious activities, and monitoring conditions to ensure stability across the city.
"Actions that create unrest or vulnerability will not be tolerated. On the contrary, initiatives that promote comfort and harmony are fully supported," he said.
Chico noted that an official circular formalizing the policy is being coordinated and is expected to be issued before Ramadan begins on February 18, 2026. Administratively, the letter will be signed and issued by the Regional Secretary.
In previous years, regulations concerning public order during Ramadan, including sweeping activities and sahur on the road events, were typically issued by relevant authorities such as the Jakarta Metro Police, in coordination with the provincial government, he added.
