Indonesia's AGO names 23 companies behind Sumatra floods, landslides

Ade Ridwan Yandwiputra, Jakarta – The Attorney General's Office has released a list of 23 companies accused of having a hand in causing ecological disasters across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Head of Legal Information Center at the Attorney General's Office, Anang Supriatna, said 6 corporations in Aceh are responsible for the floods, divided into four clusters. The first group is responsible for flooding in Simpang Kanan, Simpang Kiri, and Tamiang Jaya watersheds.

"The floods in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Timur, and Langsa are attributed to PT RWP and PT LMR," Anang said in his official statement on Monday, December 15, 2025.

The second cluster is Jambu Aye, Aceh Utara watershed, which is related to PT RTS. The third cluster is in Krueng Sawang and Pasee watersheds (Aceh Utara, Aceh Tengah, Lhoksumawe, Bireun, Bener Meriah), and PT DP.

"PT WAM and PT ANI are attributed to the Hulu Pidie watershed (Pidie)," Anang added.

Meanwhile, West Sumatra floods are allegedly caused by 11 companies; PT SBI, PT DDP, PT PJA, PT SSE, PT LAK, PT BEN, PT SM, MMP, JAM, PT AMP, and PT IS. "Triggering the floods in Air Dingin, Kuranji, and Anai watersheds (Kota Padang and Padang Panjang)," stated Anang.

In North Sumatra, several companies are responsible for the flooding that swept the region, while others for the landslides.

The floods are reportedly due to the opening of the Langkat-Kaban Jahe road and land clearing in the Pamah Semelir area.

Meanwhile, the landslides are attributed to illegal logging by individuals and six companies, namely PT TPL, CV TAS, PT NSHE, PT WIS, PT AR, and PT TBS.

Earlier, Commander of the Garuda Task Force for Forest Area Enforcement, Major General Dody Triwinarto, revealed that the task force had identified 31 companies as masterminds of ecological disasters in three regions of Sumatra. Dozens of these companies will face criminal, administrative, and compensatory penalties.

"In Aceh, there are currently 9 suspected companies directly related to the watersheds (DAS)," said Dody Triwinarto at the Attorney General's Office on Monday.

As for North Sumatra, there are 8 companies, including the land rights holders group. These companies are responsible for flash floods in the Batang Toru watershed and landslides in Langkat.

"Furthermore, in West Sumatra, it is estimated that there are 14 legal entities suspected in three watershed areas," mentioned Dody.

Flash floods and landslides have affected 52 Districts/Cities across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra since November 24, 2025.

Based on the data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on December 15, 2025, the death toll from Sumatra floods and landslides has reached 1,022 people dead, 206 missing, approximately 7,000 injured, and more than 200,000 still displaced.

In addition, 186,488 houses, 1,600 public facilities, 219 health facilities, 967 educational facilities, 434 places of worship, 290 buildings/offices, and 145 bridges have been reported damaged.
