Ichsan Ali, Jakarta – Indonesia will begin construction of five waste-to-energy projects simultaneously in June 2026 as part of a national strategy to address mounting waste challenges while accelerating the transition to renewable energy.

The strategic projects are expected to process more than 7,000 tons of waste per day.

Presidential Staff Office chief Muhammad Qodari said on Wednesday that the five projects will be located in Bekasi, Yogyakarta, Bogor, Denpasar, and Bandung.

"The targeted waste input capacity could exceed 1,000 tons per day at each location," Qodari said in Jakarta.

The projects are designed to serve densely populated areas with the following planned capacities:

• Bandung: The largest facility, with a capacity of 1,853-2,131 tons per day, serving six areas, including Bandung, Cimahi, and Garut.
• Greater Bogor: Capacity of 1,500 tons per day.
• Bekasi: Capacity of 1,400 tons per day.
• Denpasar: Capacity of 1,200 tons per day, serving Denpasar and Badung Regency.
• Yogyakarta: Capacity of 1,000 tons per day, serving Yogyakarta, Sleman Regency, and Bantul Regency.

Qodari added that a similar project in Palembang has reached 74% construction progress and is targeted to begin full operations in October 2026.

The five groundbreaking ceremonies are part of a broader government roadmap to develop waste-to-energy plants at 30 locations or urban clusters covering 61 regencies and cities by 2029.

If fully realized, Indonesia would have a waste-to-energy processing capacity of 33,000 tons per day.

That would equal nearly 23% of the country's projected daily waste generation of 141,296 tons by 2029.

"This underscores the government's commitment to waste-to-energy projects as a solution for waste management, while also advancing low-carbon development and the circular economy," Qodari said.
