Mohammad Hatta Muarabagja, Jakarta – Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) officially updated its policies under which its users are allowed to openly share pornographic content that is consensually produced and distributed, as long as the adult content is labeled and not in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.
In response, the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kominfo) stressed that the ministry could take a number of actions, including shutting down access to X. This is because pornography is prohibited under the Criminal Code, the Anti-Pornography Law, and the Electronic Information and Transactions Law or ITE Law.
"The Kominfo Ministry has a mechanism to prevent pornography in the digital realm. For example, by filtering keywords related to pornography. If X violates the rules, the Kominfo Ministry can take action, from a warning to removing the content to blocking the access [to the platform]," said Director General of Information and Public Communication, Usman Kansong, on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
The X's latest policy replaces the previous policy of Sensitive Media and Violent Speech. However, X stated, "The intent of these updates is not to change our enforcement, but to make our rules clearer for everyone."
By default, users under the age of 18 or who don't provide their birth date to X will not be exposed to the adult content. The new rules also prohibit content that encourages exploitation, is nonconsensual, objectifies, sexualizes, or harms minor groups, and is abusive or inappropriate behavior.
