Dede Leni Mardianti, Jakarta – The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) stated that Indonesia is currently facing a child pornography emergency, in addition to the ongoing online gambling crisis.

KPAI Commissioner Kawiyan emphasized the urgent need for the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) to actively eradicate child pornography content, citing numerous reports of children being exploited in sexual contexts.

"Last July, I was invited to the Indonesian National Police Headquarters to witness the disclosure of an online prostitution case involving nine underage children," Kawiyan said at the Police Headquarters in South Jakarta on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

He called for the establishment of a dedicated task force to prosecute perpetrators, actors, and creators of child pornography. He also urged the Komdigi Ministry to implement measures to restrict internet and digital access for children.

"I believe that Komdigi Ministry, with its resources and technological capabilities, can effectively prevent all forms of digital pornography, both on websites and digital platforms," he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy for Special Child Protection at the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Nahar, revealed that from January to September 2024, authorities had received 7,000 reports of child protection cases involving digital crimes. He attributed this surge to the increasing internet and digital usage among children, which stands at about 74.85 percent.

"74.85 percent of children aged 7-17 have access to the internet, primarily through smartphones, which account for 81.52 percent," Nahar said during a press conference on the disclosure of a child pornography ring at the Police Headquarters on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

Previously, the Directorate of Cyber Crimes (Dittipidsiber) of the Indonesian National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) reported uncovering 47 child pornography cases involving 58 suspects between May and November 2024.

"We have also requested the blocking of 15,659 online pornographic websites," said Sr. Comr. Dani Kustoni, Deputy Director of the Police Dittipidsiber Bareskrim, during a press briefing at the Police Bareskrim on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
