Christian Oliver – Officials in Bali have seized and destroyed dozens of sex toys belonging to tourists arriving at the Indonesian island's airport.

Customs officers destroyed a total of 27 colourful phallic objects as well as a motorised thrusting dildo machine deemed too explicit to be brought into the country.

As well as the selection of rubber penises, officials also displayed butt plugs during a press conference addressing the recent contraband.

Some 4.3 million illegally imported cigarettes were also set ablaze and numerous bottles of booze were destroyed.

The Ngurah Rai Customs Office in Bali said they destroyed goods worth a total of around #175,000 (3.4 billion Indonesian Rupiah).

The items were seized from tourists entering the Indonesian provinces of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara, between January and July this year.

Customs officials displayed the sex toys and contraband at a press conference before setting them alight.

Customs Chief, Susila Brata said: 'At almost every airport customs office, there is usually a confiscation of sex toys. They are usually brought by passengers heading to Bali.'

Although most sex toys are not explicitly banned in Indonesia, many of them are deemed too racy for the country's norms and traditions. The country – which has the largest Muslim population in the world – has strict anti-pornography laws and anyone caught viewing porn can face years in jail.

As a result of the strict legislation, sex toys have become easy targets for customs officials to confiscate at ports of entry.

This is not the first time customs officers have rounded up a collection of sex toys and banned contraband in front of a press conference. They conducted a similar event last year, torching swathes of colourful intimate objects.

Amid the recent seizure, one local resident joked: 'Why destroy the dildo machine? It is good for drilling walls.'

Users online expressed their bewilderment at the sheer number of dildos displayed by the customs officers.

The largest sex toy caught particular attention, with one user noting: 'The black mamba dildo stands firm.' Another said amid the bizarre press conference: 'The officials' faces seem very happy.'

One other commenter joked: 'I'm not sure that everything that was confiscated was destroyed. There must have been a few people sneaking in to take them.'

'From what was shown, the rest were resold or distributed among relatives,' another jeered.
