Novali Panji Nugroho, Jakarta – The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) asked presidential and vice presidential candidates and political parties to exercise patience and await the General Elections Commission's (KPU) announcement of the valid and legally binding election results.
"It is best to wait for the KPU's official decision as the only valid and legally binding election result," said the Komnas HAM head for election affairs, Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi, in a press conference on Wednesday, February 21.
Pramono also asked election participants to respond wisely to the results of the quick count, while actively maintaining peaceful situations and conditions, and refrain from doing any actions which could lead to violence or horizontal conflict.
"We encourage those who have objections to [the election result] to pursue justice through Bawaslu (the Election Supervisory Agency), DKPP (the Election Organization Ethics Council), and MK (the Constitutional Court)," he stressed.
Komnas HAM also underscored the importance of the voting rights of vulnerable groups, the neutrality of state officials, and the right to health and life of election officials.
The government and the KPU are advised to take effective measures to reduce the growing number of deaths and illnesses among election officials. Komnas HAM further stressed the need for the state to be accountable and ensure that the election officials' right to health and decent living conditions are met to prevent any human rights violations.
