Surakarta, Central Java – Mayor of Surakarta Gibran Rakabuming Raka held a meeting with Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto on Tuesday, during which the two politicians held a discussion on the former's possible move to run in the Central Java gubernatorial race in 2024.
"There's definitely a discussion about that. It's a private meeting so it's a loss if I don't talk about it [gubernatorial race]," Gibran said as quoted by Antara.
Gibran said that he also received words of advice from the senior politician, who competed against the mayor's father, incumbent President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, in 2014 and 2019.
"The advice is I should go ahead. I have explained this before, that I need to go forward," Gibran said.
Earlier on Monday, after a meeting with Gibran at the Surakarta mayoral office, Prabowo said that he gave endorsement to the former businessman's bid for Central Java governor.
"I definitely endorse him, whether he would run in Central Java or in Jakarta," Prabowo said.
Last week, Gibran held a meeting with his father at Bogor Palace, West Java, to discuss national politics and preparations for the 2024 general election.
The pair discussed "many" issues, including "mapping for 2024", Gibran told reporters afterward at the palace, reported Tempo.
Earlier this month, Gibran denied rumors that he was planning to run for Jakarta governor, saying he would wait for instruction from Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), of which both he and his father are members.
Speculation has been rife that Gibran was looking to follow in his father's footsteps by running for Jakarta governor. Another possibility is the Central Java governorship, which is currently held by fellow PDI-P politician Ganjar Pranowo.
