Irfan Kamil, Jakarta – Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) and the #CleanupIndonesia Movement Coalition held a theatrical action in front of the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) red-and-white building in South Jakarta on Wednesday December 8.
The action was held to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day which falls tomorrow, on December 9.
"The commemoration of International Anti-Corruption Day is an important moment to again remind the public about the dangers of corruption and the efforts to fight it which still need to be continued", said ICW Public Campaign Division Coordinator Tibiko Zabar in front of the KPK building on Wednesday.
The theatrical action, which started at 10 am, was joined by scores of people wearing red consumes and face masks of Spanish artist Salvador Dali. The Salvador Dali face masks were popularised in the film series "Money Heist".
They also brought posters with message such as "Out of the darkness never comes the light", "Government officials conflict of interest growing out of control", and "Mischievous state, oligarchy on the prowl".
In a speech Zabar said that the eradication of corruption in Indonesia over the last few years has suffered a retreat. In addition to this, there have been a series of controversies after the KPK Law was revised in 2019.
"Yet, efforts at the eradication of corruption must continue to be strengthened in order to create an Indonesia which is free from corruption and free from the grip of the oligarchy", said Zabar.
Not only that, ICW and the #CleanupIndonesia Coalition also took up the Covid-19 social assistance corruption case which implicated former Social Affairs Minister Juliari Batubara.
According to Zabar, although Batubara was tried and sentenced, the case has yet to enter its final round.
"There is still a lot of homework for the KPK to do to resolve this case", said Zabar. "We call on the KPK to investigate the other actors who are allegedly involved, both from the private sector, the executive as well as the legislative", he said.
