Egi Adyatama, Jakarta – The National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) Governor Agus Widjojo on Thursday said that the results of the 2020 simultaneous regional head elections (Pilkada) show the growth of political dynasty.

This is evident in the vote recap by the General Elections Commission (KPU) showing 55 candidates out of 124 or 44 percent are affiliated with the political dynasties of state officials or former state officials.

"The dynasty phenomenon has actually hampered the democratic consolidation at the local level and at the same time weakened a political party's institution and put forward a personal approach rather than organizational," wrote Agus Widjojo in a statement on February 11.

Due to this phenomenon, Agus views that political recruitments are only controlled by a small group of oligarchs amidst a democratic nation.

Apart from the political dynasty, the Lemhanas governor also found that money politics was strongly detected in the December 2020 regional elections across 19 provinces.

"Continuous money politics will ruin democracy in Indonesia as it would shift voting to a transactional act for short-term interests and sets aside a candidate's long term vision on development," said Agus Widjojo.
