Jakarta's ETLE traffic cameras set for upgrade to catch more violations

Jakarta's traffic cameras will undergo a technological upgrade, police say, so that they will have the ability to catch a larger array of traffic violations in the capital.

The Jakarta Metro Police's Traffic Directorate said the traffic cameras, which are part of the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system, will get the technological boost this year.

"Cameras are getting more advanced all the time, and we are looking for cameras to catch all sorts of violations. For example, three people on a motorcycle, motorcyclists not wearing helmets, motorcyclists entering the busway lane," Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Director Sambodo Purnomo said.

"Those are the cameras we will use, so the cameras won't only be effective for four-wheeled vehicles, but two-wheeled vehicles as well."

Sambodo added that the upgraded cameras will be able to detect fake license plates as well.

ETLE was introduced to Jakarta in 2018, but the technology was not capable of catching violations by motorcyclists before January 2020. Even then, the system was only able to impose fines on those who sport Jakarta license plates due to database limitations.

ETLE allows police to utilize CCTV cameras to catch and review traffic violations. If the police decide there has been a violation, they will send a traffic ticket to the motorist's address by mail and/or email. The motorist will then have one week to pay their fine via a partner bank. Failure to do so would result in their vehicle registration being frozen, meaning the motorist wouldn't be able to pay their annual vehicle tax until their fines are paid.

Fifty-seven cameras have been set up on some of Jakarta's busiest roads, including Sudirman and Thamrin in Central Jakarta. Police say they're aiming to have 100 cameras, including on toll roads and busway lanes, by the end of 2021.
