Ervana Trikarinaputri, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia aims to begin mass production of electric sedans by 2028 as part of the government's broader push to develop the country's domestic electric vehicle industry.
Prabowo announced the target during the inauguration of an electric commercial vehicle assembly plant operated by PT VKTR Sakti Industries in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday, April 9.
"Our plan is that by 2028, we hope to begin mass production of electric sedans," Prabowo said, according to a livestream broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
The president said Indonesia has already demonstrated its ability to produce electric commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, describing it as an important step in building a broader national electric vehicle ecosystem.
To support the 2028 target, Prabowo said the government is also preparing to establish a company dedicated to producing electric sedans.
"We are also in the process of establishing a company to produce electric sedans," he said.
Prabowo inaugurated the electric vehicle assembly plant of PT VKTR Sakti Industries, a subsidiary of PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas, part of the Bakrie Group.
The facility is Indonesia's first completely knocked down (CKD) commercial electric vehicle assembly plant specifically designed to assemble electric buses and trucks. Construction of the plant began in February 2024.
During the ceremony, Prabowo praised the plant's reported production capacity of up to 10,000 electric buses, saying the project marked a significant milestone for Indonesia's industrial development.
He added that domestic production of electric vehicles is in line with Indonesia's broader goal of accelerating the use of cleaner and renewable energy sources.
"Today, I am very happy and very proud that Indonesia now has the capability to produce electric buses and trucks. This is very, very important," he said.
