Alfitria Nefi Pratiwi, Jakarta – Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said the Indonesian government's project to reactivate 12,000 kilometers of railway lines will begin in West Java. "It appears that we will prioritize the West Java region first," he said at Gambir Station on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
Additionally, the government is also planning to reactivate railway lines in Banten, said the minister, although it has yet to be included in the government's budget.
The reactivation of railway lines is aligned with President Prabowo Subianto's directive to reactivate the railway lines up to 12,000 kilometers.
The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said the railway line reactivation is intended to support the transportation of goods and passengers by the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI.
This reactivation will continue from the current approximately 7,000 kilometers of active railway. "Hopefully, it can further increase the mobility and transportation of the public, including goods and services," he said at a press conference at Gambir Station, Jakarta, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
The minister added that the transportation of goods by railway remains a priority, especially since railway services can reduce the volume of vehicles on the roads.
The government hopes to improve productivity with more cost-efficient operations through the railway line reactivation, said the minister. "Logistics transportation costs are also very dependent on the availability of railway tracks and freight trains," he said.
President Director of KAI, Bobby Rasyidin, stated that this reactivation aims to reduce the current congestion on the railway lines. In the future, the railway lines to be reactivated will start from Cianjur to Bandung, then from South Bandung through Soreang to Ciwidey. "Maybe, we will target around 500-600 kilometers first," said Bobby.
The reactivation project will begin this year with a target of 12,000 kilometers. KAI is also anticipating the tracks that are currently crowded with motor vehicles and the mobility of the surrounding community.
