Jakarta – Public relations agency ID COMM recently launched a new report on electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia, which showed that economic motives were what had mostly driven people to switch their rides.

The report wrote that Indonesia's electric car market was still in the so-called "early adopter curve", although Southeast Asia's biggest economy is on the path to becoming an "early majority". The report attributed the adoption to the government's series of stimuli, be it economic or non-economic incentives. Most Indonesian EV owners are primarily those who already possess the conventional, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

"Economic motives mainly drive the electric car adoption in Indonesia, particularly operational cost savings and fiscal incentives. The users mainly come from the urban upper middle class who already own ICE vehicles. This transition represents a behavioral shift rather than the expansion of a new market," the report stated.

"Efficiency narratives and a modern lifestyle are the primary drivers, while environmental considerations are still secondary."

Asti Putri, the lead researcher and co-founder of ID COMM, said that the report had undergone a thorough process, as it not only took into account the sales trend of electric cars.

According to Asti, the report paid attention to consumer behavior, but also the charging infrastructure, industry readiness, and many more. The research team also examined the regulations and held in-depth interviews, including with the industry players, consumers, media, and the community. They also held focus group discussions to examine the perceptions among stakeholders, directly observed user behavior at gas stations, and monitored public conversations on social media.

"The challenge isn't just collecting data, but how to make that data resonate and generate relevant insights. Certainly, both quantitative and qualitative methods are equally strong and powerful," Asti said.
