AGO now says it will form 'special task force' to resolve outstanding rights cases

Ainurrahman Rabu – The Attorney General's Office has responded to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's instruction to resolve past gross human rights violations which have been left hanging in the air.

During the commemoration of International Human Rights Day on December 10 and the opening of an AGO national working meeting, President Widodo said that the AGO is the key to resolving past gross human right violations. Because of this he said that he hopes that outstanding case which can be resolved.

AGO legal information centre chief Leonard Eben Ezer Simanjuntak says that the AGO will form a Gross Human Rights Violations Resolution Task Force under the authority of the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes [Yuspar] to conduct a problem, completion and settlement mitigation as well as a recommendation on how to resolve cases of past gross human rights violations.

"Pak [Mr] Attorney General plans to form a task force under the control of the deputy attorney general", said Simanjuntak at his office on Wednesday December 16.

As has been reported, when Widodo opened the AGO working meeting he asked the Attorney General to resolve outstanding past gross human rights violations.

"Concrete progress in efforts to resolve past human rights violations need to be seen immediately", said Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday December 14.

Widodo said that the government's commitment to resolve past human rights problems must continue to be followed up and that synergy between institutions, such as with the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), must be improved.

"Cooperation with Komnas HAM needs to be more effective", said Widodo.

The day before, on December 15, Media Indonesia quoted Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Yuspar as reiterating the AGO's long-standing position that the investigation dossiers on 13 cases of gross human rights violations investigated by Komnas HAM and submitted to the AGO have yet met the formal and material requirements for a criminal investigation and prosecution and have been returned to Komnas HAM so they can be completed.
