Ghina Ghaliya, Jakarta – Prabowo Subianto's defeat in the 2019 presidential election has not affected his chances of becoming president, a politician has said.

The spokesperson for the Prabowo-led Gerindra Party, Andre Rosiade, said it was possible for the party to support Prabowo again in the 2024 race, as long as the people still want him to run.

"If people want Prabowo in 2024, why not?" Andre said on Wednesday

Andre named several leaders who have shown they can win an election at an older age, including 93-year-old Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Ma'ruf Amin, who became Indonesia's vice president at the age of 76.

"In 2024, Prabowo is only 72 years old. If he is still healthy, then why not?" Andre said. "Who knows if Prabowo also doesn't want to give the opportunity to the youngsters?"

The Indonesian Survey Circle's (LSI) Denny JA said Prabowo was a potential presidential candidate for the 2024 race.

Other names on the list, he said, were National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, Golkar Party chairman Airlangga Hartarto, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri's daughter Puan Maharani, former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's son Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, National Intelligence Agency (BIN) head Budi Gunawan, National Police chief Tito Karnavian, former TNI Commander Gatot Nurmantyo and former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.

However, Andre said it was too early to discuss the 2024 race. "It's still too far away. We'll see how things develop and the dynamics," he said.
