Celvin Moniaga Sipahutar, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto honored Indonesia's 2025 SEA Games medalists on Thursday, awarding $28 million in bonuses after the team exceeded expectations.
Indonesia collected a total of 333 medals at the regional sporting event, finishing second overall with 91 golds, 111 silvers and 131 bronzes – exceeding the Youth and Sports Ministry's target of 80 gold medals.
Prabowo delivered his remarks during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Thursday in Jakarta, where the government awarded performance bonuses to members of the Indonesian SEA Games contingent.
"As head of state, head of government and as an individual, I extend my gratitude to all of you for successfully upholding the honor of the Indonesian nation," Prabowo said.
"If athletes are weak and keep losing, it reflects a weak nation. Success in sports shows that our nation is strong and capable," he added.
To mark the achievement, the government disbursed a total of Rp 465.25 billion ($27.7 million) in bonuses to athletes and coaching staff. Individual gold medalists received the largest payouts at Rp 1 billion each, nearly double the Rp 525 million awarded at the previous SEA Games.
Bonuses for individual silver and bronze medalists were maintained at Rp 315 million and Rp 157 million, respectively. Athletes competing in doubles and team events received bonuses based on a separate calculation scheme. Prabowo symbolically handed the awards to representatives of the athletes during the ceremony.
The president urged athletes not to be complacent, calling on them to aim for higher achievements at major global competitions such as the Asian Games and the Olympics.
"Do not be satisfied with what you have achieved," Prabowo said. "Prepare yourselves to compete and excel at the highest levels."
