Hendrik Yaputra, Jakarta – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported 13 more deaths from the Sumatra disasters. Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data and Information Center, said the total death toll from floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra reached 1,154 by Wednesday evening, December 31, 2025.

Aceh recorded the highest number of deaths with 527. North Sumatra followed with 365 fatalities, while West Sumatra reported 262 deaths.

BNPB also noted two more missing persons in West Sumatra, bringing the total missing to 165. During a press conference on the disaster response, Abdul stated, "There are 31 missing persons in Aceh, 60 in North Sumatra, and 74 in West Sumatra."

Abdul added that the number of evacuees fell by 17,631. As of Wednesday, 378,164 people remain in shelters. This total includes 356,655 residents from Aceh, 11,574 from North Sumatra, and 9,935 from West Sumatra.

The floods and landslides hit 52 regencies and cities across the three provinces in late November 2025. While the regions remain in a state of emergency, the central government has not declared it a national disaster. This is despite repeated requests from various groups. Nearly a month after the initial disaster, the management status varies by region.

Abdul Muhari explained that 22 regencies and cities have now set a transitional emergency status. Meanwhile, five other areas are currently applying for the legal papers needed to enter this transitional phase.
