Sultan Abdurrahman, Jakarta – The death toll from the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, continues to rise. As of Sunday, August 23, 2026, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded a total of 91 fatalities.
"The death toll stands at 91, an increase of four from the previous day," said Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB's Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, during an online press conference.
Berton reported that the highest number of fatalities occurred in Manggarai Regency (32 deaths) and East Manggarai Regency (31 deaths). Meanwhile, 14 people died in Nagekeo, six in Sikka, five in Ngada, two in Ende, and one in West Manggarai.
Regarding gender, Berton stated that 40 of the deceased were male and 48 were female; the gender of the remaining three victims is unknown as they have not yet been identified.
The fatalities included 39 elderly individuals, four children under the age of three, one child under the age of five, 12 children and adolescents, and 35 adults. A total of 1,286 people were injured in the earthquake.
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara on the morning of Saturday, August 15, 2026. To date, the BNPB has recorded 5,688 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 1.1 to 6.2.
The BNPB confirmed that post-earthquake response efforts are ongoing. However, the needs of the residents in East Nusa Tenggara have not yet been fully met.
Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Arifah Fauzi stated that the specific needs of women and children affected by the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara have not been fully addressed. The government plans to dispatch special aid for these vulnerable groups via a Hercules aircraft on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Arifah noted that the aid is being sent in collaboration with several development partners. The aid will be transported directly to NTT to meet the needs of women and children in the affected areas.
"God willing, we will depart for NTT tomorrow. A Hercules aircraft has been made available for us," said Arifah while attending the inauguration of Kampung Dolanan in Sidowayah Village, Polanharjo District, Klaten Regency, Central Java, on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
