Andi Adam Faturahman, Jakarta – Tempo's journalist Francisca Christy Rosana, also known as Cica, received the 2025 Udin Award at the 31st Anniversary of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) on Friday, August 8, 2025. Cica was awarded the Udin Award along with another journalist, Safwan Ashari Raharusun.
In their consideration, the Jury Panel of the 2025 Udin Award stated that amidst the strong militarism threatening press freedom, Cica, who had experienced terror such as receiving a pig's head and digital attacks, continues to make a meaningful impression.
"It's not just about enduring a series of massive terror attacks, but they never backed down in maintaining the quality and dedication to journalism," stated one of the Jury members, Herlambang Wiratraman, at the RRI Building, Yusuf Ronodipuro Room, Central Jakarta, on Friday, August 8, 2025.
During a teleconference, Cica expressed her gratitude to the entire press community for their support in winning the 2025 Udin Award. This is the second similar award that Cica has received.
Last year, together with other Tempo journalists involved in the Bocor Alus Politik podcast, Cica won the Udin Award after the jury panel deemed the podcast inspiring the public to participate in upholding a free and independent press.
Cica mentioned that receiving the Udin Award brings both emotions of joy and sadness. This is because the presence of the Udin Award signifies that press freedom in Indonesia is not yet fully independent, or far from what is hoped for.
"My friends, this award is not actually for me, but for all of us who continue to have the courage, at the very least for female journalists who persist amidst the difficulties in a situation where media pressure is increasing," said Cica.
The Udin Award is given to journalists, groups of journalists, communities, or media institutions that have experienced violence while carrying out their professional journalistic duties. The award aims to promote press freedom and freedom of expression.
Udin is the nickname of Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin, a journalist from Haian Bernas in Yogyakarta, who was murdered on August 16, 1996, for reporting on corruption and collusion involving officials and the military in the city.
