Antara, Jakarta – Indonesia has restored access to Wikipedia after previously restricting the platform for failing to register with local authorities, a senior official from the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry said on Thursday.
The decision followed full compliance by the Wikimedia Foundation, which has now completed its registration as a Private Electronic System Operator (PSE), according to Director General of Digital Space Oversight Alexander Sabar.
"Wikimedia Foundation Inc has finally completed its full registration, so its services have been normalized," Alexander said.
Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid had earlier said that the registration process began on April 28 with assistance from her ministry.
The Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization, operates several digital platforms in Indonesia, including Wikipedia.
Access to some of its services had been partially restricted after authorities found that the organization had not registered with the government by the end of 2025, despite regulations requiring such registration having been in place since 2019, Meutya said.
The government had previously set an early April 2026 deadline for the foundation to comply with the registration requirement.
