Dian Rahma Fika, Jakarta – A Member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission II, Muhammad Khozin, disclosed that the parliament will begin discussing the Election Bill next year. House Commission II is tasked with discussing the bill.
"God Willing, if there are no obstacles, the official discussion of the Election Bill will start in 2026," said Khozin, who attended a virtual discussion on the General Election Law observed at the Bawaslu office in Jakarta on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
Khozin mentioned that the Commission II has held various hearings to prepare for the Election Bill discussion. "The Indonesian House of Representatives, through Commission II, has started conducting a series of public hearings and is about to start a focus group discussion to take the initial steps to mitigate the problems arising from the elections, both presidential and regional elections," he said.
According to Khozin, the urgency of the discussion on the Election Bill is heavily influenced by the Constitutional Court's decision number 116 concerning parliamentary representation. Khozin also noted that there were 98 constitutional reviews in the Constitutional Court from 2023 to 2024. "There are legal loopholes that must be addressed so we all have the same perspective on the law," said Khozin.
Previously, Chair of the DPR Legislative Body, or Baleg, Bob Hasan, denied that Commission II and Baleg were vying for the discussion of the Election Law, claiming that the bill is yet to be drafted.
However, Bob could not confirm when the bill would be discussed, but assured that the parliament is working within a 2026 deadline. "We will look for the right momentum," he said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
The alleged rivalry for the discussion of the bill surfaced when Deputy Chair of Commission II, Aria Bima, asked House leadership to assign the Election Bill to his commission, instead of Baleg.
Meanwhile, Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the House leadership could not yet decide whether the Election Bill was to be assigned to Commission II or Baleg, which proposed the bill for the 2025 priority list.
