Novali Panji Nugroho, Jakarta – The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) coordinator Anis Hidayah said the commission supports the protection given to Francisca Christy Rosana, a Tempo journalist who was terrorized by a package containing a severed pig's head. She said the commission has partnered with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency, or LPSK, to provide access to this protection.
"We have coordinated with LPSK to immediately provide access to protection for Cica (Francisca's nickname)," she said during an audience with Tempo at the Tempo Media Group office in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Protection and recovery mechanisms are often overlooked in the context of human rights, she said.
Not only for Cica, Komnas HAM and LPSK will provide protection to the families of journalists as well as the hosts of the Bocor Alus Politik podcast. She said that Komnas HAM will act swiftly to anticipate the emergence of other forms of terror.
In a written statement, Deputy Chairperson of LPSK, Sri Suparyati, stated that the institution is ready to provide protection for journalists who have been subjected to terror. She said that this protection is to anticipate any form of threat against journalists.
"So that journalists can work safely without pressure that may hinder their important duties," Sri said in her statement, as quoted on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
She said, under certain conditions, protection can be provided shortly after a request is submitted to the agency. This special condition, she said, is due to the vulnerability of the position of journalists and human rights defenders to various forms of threats or intimidation.
LPSK, together with Komnas HAM and the National Commission on Violence Against Women, has designed a rapid response mechanism by taking preventive measures. These measures include physical protection, procedural rights fulfillment, and relocation to ensure the safety of journalists.
Tempo has experienced terror attacks twice, with the first occurring on March 19. At that time, Tempo's editorial office received a package containing a pig's head, devoid of ears. The package containing the pig's head was addressed to Cica. She only opened the package on March 20, along with her colleague Husein Abri Dongoran.
A few days after, another package came, this time containing rats carcasses, which was discovered on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 8:00 AM.
