Floods hit East Jakarta as Ciliwung river overflows

Antara, Jakarta – At least 18 neighborhood units (RT) in East Jakarta were submerged by floods on Monday morning at 08:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time). The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said the flooding was caused by the overflowing Ciliwung River.

"The flooding originally occurred in 13 RT, but now it has spread to 18 RT or 0.059 percent of the total 30,772 RT throughout Jakarta," said acting head of the Jakarta BPBD Isnawa Adji on Monday, April 15, as reported by Antara.

Four of the 18 RT are located in Bidara Cina Subdistrict. The height of the floodwater varied between 40 and 50 centimeters. Additionally, the flood also inundated eight RT in Kampung Melayu with water levels of 40-75 cm, five RT in Cawang with water levels of 40 cm, and one RT in Cililitan with water levels of 50 cm."Floodwaters have receded in three RTs in East Pejaten," Isnawa said.

The heavy rains that occurred on Sunday raised the status of the Katulampa Dam to Alert Three (Waspada) at 17:00 WIB, the sluice gate at the Sunter Hulu Monitoring Post to Alert Two (Siaga) at 20:00 WIB, and the sluice gate at the Depok Post to Alert Three (Waspada) at 21:00 WIB.

Isnawa said that 267 disaster mitigation officers have been alerted in all flood-prone areas.

According to the Jakarta BPBD, there are 25 flood-prone areas across the capital as follows:

1. Five sub-districts in West Jakarta: Rawa Buaya, Tegal Alur, South Kedoya, North Kedoya, and North Kembangan.

2. Nine sub-districts in South Jakarta: North Cipete, Petogogan, Cipulir, Pondok Pinang, Ulujami, Pondok Labu, Bangka, East Pejaten, and Jati Padang.

3. Eight sub-districts in East Jakarta: Bidara Cina, Kampung Melayu, Cawang, Cililitan, Cipinang Melayu, Kebon Pala, Makasar, and Rambutan.

4. Three sub-districts in North Jakarta: West Pademangan, Pluit, and Rorotan.
