Adinda Jasmine and Amelia Rahima, Jakarta – A political observer Adi Prayitno assessed that the verdict of the Constitutional Court (MK) judges in the election dispute (PHPU) case will not alter the current conditions, which is that Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka are the victors of the 2024 presidential election.
According to the Executive Director of Parameter Politik Indonesia, there has never been a court ruling in the past to nullify election outcomes, direct re-election, or disqualify candidates.
"[These] have never happened in the history of our presidential elections. So I think the dispute over the presidential election results at the Constitutional Court won't have a significant impact," Adi told Tempo on Sunday, April 14.
At present, Adi said, the public believed that the Constitutional Court judges' decisions could not be separated from political aspects, especially concerning decision Number 90/PUU-XXI/2023 on the presidential age limit.
"It is comprehensible that the current dispute over the election results at the Constitutional Court is also related to political interests," he said.
However, after the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court was replaced, the political watcher claimed that the public's confidence in the Constitutional Court started to revive.
"Several of the Constitutional Court's verdicts have been lauded by the public. For example, the lowering of the parliamentary threshold, the removal of vague articles linked to defamation," he reiterated.
Therefore, the public is hopeful that the upcoming decision of the Constitutional Court on the dispute over the 2024 presidential election results would be impartial and adhere to a sense of legal justice. "The key is objectivity and integrity to uphold democracy," Adi concluded.
