Apriadi Gunawan, Medan – The Medan District Court in North Sumatra has handed the death penalty to a 60-year-old for transporting close to 43 kilograms of sabu-sabu (crystal methamphetamine).
"We sentence the defendant Wardani Ibrahim to the death penalty," presiding judge Dahlan said at the court on Tuesday.
The verdict corresponded with the demand from prosecutors who sought the death sentence for Wardani, a resident of Bireuen Regency, Aceh, who was charged under Article 114(2) of the 2009 Narcotics Law.
Dahlan ordered Wardani to be held in custody until the verdict was declared final before moving on to his execution.
He argued the fact that Wardani had hindered the government's program to eradicate the distribution of narcotics and that his acts had endangered and damaged the younger generation were some of the reasons for the heavy sentence.
The judges found no mitigating factors to lighten the sentence, Dahlan added.
On Tuesday in a separate trial session at the Medan District Court, presiding judge Fauzul sentenced a narcotics courier Sofian Syah to life in prison for transporting close to 100 kilograms of marijuana.
The life sentence was lighter than the prosecutor's demand for Sofian to receive the death penalty. (ami)
