Jayanty Nada Shofa, Jakarta – The Indonesian government has recently destroyed Rp 940.4 million (almost $53,000) worth of fake goods that had copied the well-known French apparel brand Lacoste as Jakarta tries to allay investors' worries.

There were 567 fake Lacoste items, a huge bulk of which are jersey shirts. This followed a trademark infringement dispute between local company PT Terra Store and Lacoste. Both sides had agreed to settle the dispute amicably, according to a ministerial release.

Hermansyah Siregar, the director-general of intellectual property at the Law Ministry, said on Monday that the move goes beyond destroying fake goods. It also aims to promote fair competition and a favorable investment climate.

"The government is here to safeguard the integrity of our intellectual property system and provide legal certainty for businesses," Hermansyah said.

The government had identified the Rp 940.4 million estimate by comparing the retail prices of the authentic goods sold in the market. The figure also reflects the "substantial potential losses" that could have resulted had the fake Lacoste goods made it to the consumers.

In Indonesia, Lacoste has picked multi-brand lifestyle retailer Mitra Adiperkasa (MAP) as its distributor.

A June 2026 list uploaded on Lacoste's official website shows that the company is also working with several Indonesian suppliers – including textile powerhouse Pan Brothers – for garments and footwear.

The destruction came about two months after the US kept Indonesia on its "priority watch list" of countries deemed intellectual property rights abusers. The rampant online counterfeit sales have also rattled Washington. Shortly after the US report came out, Hermansyah had told the Jakarta Globe that Indonesia "respects every input from its trading partners", while listing efforts being made at home to combat piracy and counterfeit products.

"Intellectual property protection is not just an international obligation, but also vital for a healthy investment climate," Hermansyah said.

"We are open to working with the US government, global businesses, and all stakeholders."
