Police to reinstate manual traffic ticketing as accidents rise

Dicky Kurniawan (Antara), Jakarta – The National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) is strongly considering reintroducing manual traffic ticketing after it had been stopped in October of last year to boost the use of electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) and eliminate the possibility of bribes.

One of the aspects motivating police to reenact manual ticketing is due to the increasing number of traffic accidents during the major traffic operation known as 'operasi lilin' held from December 23 to January 2.

Another consideration to reintroduce field enactment is because of the low public awareness on obeying traffic regulations. National Police Traffic Corp general Firman Shantyabudi also lamented the myriad of cases where road users intentionally uninstall their license plates to avoid electronic ticketing cameras.

Police logged an 11 percent increase in traffic accidents during the 2022 Lilin Jaya Operation compared to 2019. Fortunately, deaths because of these accidents were able to be reduced by 4 percent.
