Anita Permata D, Fadhli Ruhman, Jakarta – Data has shown that, on average, women are only attending school for eight years or more, meaning that a large percentage of women are only finishing primary education, an Indonesian minister said.

Gender equality deputy at the Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry Lenny N. Rosalin delivered the remarks at the 2022 Indonesia Women in Cyber Security (IWCS) Annual Summit on Monday.

The figure for women is far lower compared to men, she noted. On average, men stay in school for nine years, meaning that they at least finish middle school.

Therefore, the ministry has called for the utilization of simple and easily understood language for the dissemination of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) activities targeting women.

"In carrying out dissemination and other necessary activities, we certainly have to utilize a very simple, easily understood language because many of them are still academically far behind," Rosalin explained.

The digital literacy index, which takes into account the four pillars of digital culture, digital ethics, digital skills, and digital safety, has also shown that women are still far behind men, Rosalin informed.

This has happened because there is still a gender gap in digital transformation related to the utilization of telephones, the Internet, artificial intelligence, big data, and social media, she highlighted.

During the event, the deputy also highlighted that men are dominating human resources in Indonesia's information and communication technology sector.

She cited data pegging women's participation in global cyber security at only 11 percent.

This has become an opportunity for women to show other people that they can pursue a career in the information and communication technology sector.

Rosalin said she also expects cyber security to become a career choice for women.
