M Julnis Firmansyah, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, in delivering the Supreme Court (MA) annual report special session on Tuesday encouraged the use of alternative models in solving cases such as mediation for civil disputes and restorative justice for criminal offenses.

"Alternative models to settle cases need to be applied to reduce the burden on the court," said the President on February 22.

He expects the modern legal settlement transformation can make judicial services much more efficient in terms of time, simplify it, and lower the cost.

In addition, Jokowi encourages the Indonesian judicial system to prioritize dialogue processes involving perpetrators, victims and related parties in a professional, transparent and accountable manner.

"We hope the Supreme Court will remain consistent in strengthening access to justice for vulnerable groups, namely women, children and persons with disabilities through strengthening regulations, services and access to disability in every line of court," Jokowi asserted.

The President expects the Supreme Court to provide fair legal certainty for business actors and investors, protect state assets and public assets as well as provide a deterrent effect for corruptors and "mafias" in the legal realm.
