Antara, Jakarta – The Indonesian government has transferred 1,882 high-risk inmates from prisons across the country to the maximum-security correctional complex on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java, by the end of 2025, officials said.

Director General of Corrections Mashudi said the transfers were aimed at preventing security and public order disruptions, while ensuring that inmate supervision and rehabilitation are aligned with individual risk levels.

"As we approach the end of this year, a total of 1,882 high-risk inmates from across Indonesia have been relocated to Nusakambangan," Mashudi said, as quoted by Antara on Sunday.

He said the policy is expected to significantly improve security conditions within correctional facilities, particularly through the enforcement of a zero-tolerance approach to narcotics and a strict ban on mobile phones.

"These measures are in line with repeated directives from Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto," Mashudi added.

Beyond security considerations, Mashudi said the primary objective of relocating high-risk inmates to Nusakambangan is behavioral reform, allowing them to reflect on their actions and reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens upon release.

The most recent transfer took place on Saturday, involving 130 high-risk inmates from the provinces of Jambi, Riau, and Banten, he said.
