Indonesia logs most Covid-19 cases In Southeast Asia

Zacharias Wuragil, Jakarta – The broad spread of Covid-19 infections caused by the latest variant, Omicron, has made Indonesia become one of the largest contributors to the number of cases of infection in the Southeast Asia region.

Citing data from the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus resource center dashboard as of Monday evening February 14 shows Indonesia passing VIetnam and the Philippines after a couple of days prior also passed Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Additional 36,501 new reported cases added to the 28 days accumulation to 536,129 with the death toll reaching 1,006 cases in the same period.

The Southeast Asian country with the closest number of cases is Vietnam that has logged 487,314 new Covid-19 cases in the last month with 3,337 deaths. The third contributor to SE Asia's coronavirus tally is the Philippines with 431,884 cumulative cases for the past 28 days with a death toll reaching 2,023 cases.

At a global scale, the Johns Hopkins University data places the United States as the top contributor within the past month with 11.8 million and 65,561 deaths related to Covid-19. This is followed by France with 7.5 million new cases and 7,862 deaths.

The third country contributing the most to the Covid-19 global tally is India with 5.2 million new cases and 22,560 deaths while countries ranking fourth and fifth are Brazil (4.4 million new cases) and Germany (4.4 million new cases).
